Ocean Extreme Sports is planning our annual ultimate snow kiting trip to Utah. Having snow kited various spots in northern Utah over the past 4 years, we are confident that this is the best snow kiting spot in the U.S. 500 inches of snow annually on average and consistent SW winds coming up out of the valley into upper mountain bowls creates perfect snow kiting conditions. Powder Mountain now has a dedicated snow kiting area on the upper mountain, making it the epic snow kite destination. If the wind does not blow, you can choose from 4 ski resorts within an hours drive - Powder Mountain, Snow Basin, Park City, and The Canyons - all of which have epic terrain and tons of powder with a variety of terrain. If the wind cranks we can also check out Strawberry Reservoir, which is known as one of Utah’s finest snow kiting areas with upper mountain terrain above the lake. While the dates are not set in stone at this point, the Powder Mountain Superfly Open is the second week of March, which is a possibility. The later in the season, the more snow there is, but the slopes get more crowded towards spring break. Drop us a line and let us know when you would like to go, because we want to bring a nice group of riders this year! Send us a message or call 904-461-9415 and ask for Eddie.

2009 SUPERFLY OPEN SNOWKITING COMPETITION TO RIP AT POWDER MOUNTAIN

(Eden, UT) (January 29, 2009) – The second annual SuperFly Open sponsored by Utah Urban Surf Kiteboarding and Best Kiteboarding will bring some of the world’s best snowkiters to Powder Mountain, March 13 through15, 2009. The event will include three categories of competition as well as free snowkite clinics that are open to the public. SuperFly celebrations and award parties will be held during the evening hours at Ogden’s entertainment district, Historic 25th Street.

Last year the event attracted more than 50 of the world’s best snowkiters with competitors traveling as far as Norway. With the success of last year’s event, organizers anticipate a substantial growth in competitors and spectators this year.

“If you’ve ever watched the colorful beauty of hot air balloons launching, imagine the balloon on a pair of skis or snowboard ripping across the horizon. It will give you some inkling and intrigue of the sport,” said Tyler Tate, owner of Utah Urban Surf Kiteboarding. “It’s colorful, it’s dynamic, and it’s COOL! Charge up your cameras and video recorders and head on up to Powder Mountain!”

The action will take place in an area known as “The Towers” in the Hidden Lake area of Powder Mountain (just south of the top of the Sunrise Poma lift.) Slide rails and boxes are being generously provided by event sponsors. The elevation of that area is approximately 9,000 ft.

“Those intrigued by the sport are welcome to watch some of these top athletes,” said Tate. “The viewing area is wide and open, so folks can cruise on over and take a break from skiing or riding to watch all the action, grab a burger and enjoy the incredible backdrop of the entire Wasatch Range and Great Salt Lake.” Three categories of competition will be on display – Freestyle, Kite Races and Big Air. There will also be timed challenges hosted by Ogden-based timepiece manufacturer Suunto. Additionally, free clinics will take place each day and are open to the public.

The celebration of snowkiting doesn’t end when the lifts stop running. On Friday night, the Best Bash includes food, drink and music, and the popular “Best Girls Contest” at Ogden’s entertainment district, Historic 25th Street. The finalists for Fridays’ Model Contest will be selected from two preliminary model searches held at Green Street Bar in downtown Salt Lake City. Wilhelmina Urban will be scouting and running the model searches for more local talent while the Green Street bar is excited to be hosting the first rounds in the snow lodge atmosphere on February 13 and 27, 2009. Come enjoy super sexy girls as the showcase the latest in snow wear. Green Street Social Club and Brewskies are private clubs for members.

Saturday evening’s dinner at Red Moose Lodge will feature an exciting multi-media presentation on snowkiting expeditions, including an expedition by Andrew McLean, photographer and author of “The Chuting Gallery” (a Utah steep backcountry ski guide book.)

The event is sponsored by Utah Urban Surf Kiteboarding, Powder Mountain, Best Kiteboarding, Lakeside Resort Properties, Wolf Creek Utah Resort Lodging, Red Bull, and Ogden Valley Magazine. Community supporters include Red Moose Lodge & Spa, Diamond Peak Mountain Sports, Alpine Pizza, Zions Bank, Ogden/Weber Convention Visitors Bureau and G.O.A.L. (Greater Ogden Athletic Foundation.) Contributing sponsors include Drift and The Kiteboarder Magazine.

The Event:
Best Kiteboarding and Utah Urban Surf Kiteboarding are teaming up to host the 2nd annual 2009 Powder Mountain SuperFly Open. This spectacular and unique snowkite festival is scheduled for March 13th, 14th and 15th, 2009. The event will take place at Powder Mountain Resort, known for the most skiable acreage in the U.S., rated best snow in the U.S. by Ski Magazine, and of course, infamous for ridge top WIND.

The SuperFly Open will have something for everyone. Enjoy ski-in, ski-out introductory kite clinics and watch some of the best snowkiter’s in the world showcase their talent. Launch snow features prepared with the help of Powder Mountain’s own snow grooming team. Slide rails and boxes generously provided by event sponsors. Compete in or watch any of the three competition categories, freestyle, kitercross, or big air. Multi-evening festivities include music, Best Girls contest, dining, awards, and multimedia presentations from some of the greatest athletes in the sport. For more information, visit www.superflyopen.com.

The SuperFly Open is a major stop on the US Snow Kite Winter Tour in the United States. The explosion of kiteboarding in the U.S. has been demonstrated by the fact that there were only 2 events in the 2002/2003 season, compared to over 30 events held nationwide in the 2005/2006 season. This winter there are over 20 events for Snowkiting alone.

The Location:
Powder Mountain Resort has one of the best areas in Utah to snowkite because of its high elevation, exposure to wind, great snow and a suitable riding area. The main riding area and the location for this year’s event is the “Towers Area,” located at the top of the Sunrise Lift and just east of the Hidden Lake Parking Lot. The event will be visible and accessible from the Hidden Lake Lodge, the Hidden Lake Parking Lot, and the Sunrise Lift.

Twisted Kiteboards launches a radical new design, the Velocity Snowkite Board.

Rob Whittall - “We have developed a specialized board for the dedicated Snowkiter, designed specifically for the rigors of Snowkiting. This unique design incorporates many new features, which allow the board to ride and feel smoother on the snow. Delivering a feeling that is closer to Kitesurfing, less fatiguing than a traditional snowboard, and allowing the rider to enjoy the Snowkiting experience even more.”

The technology inside the Velocity:

Posi + Rocker – The Velocity has a positive rocker, and this upward curve across the board helps with initiating turns at slow speeds and prevents edges from grabbing when riding flat.

Posi + Side Cut – The positive and progressive side cut gives the Velocity its unique shape while providing plenty of contact between the edge and snow. The Posi + Side Cut allows the board to cut through and float over the snow efficiently while tracking very directly.

True Flex – The Velocity has a constant flex pattern that extends from tip to tail allowing the deck to flex extensively, giving a natural and progressive carve to every turn. The constant flex increases the pop for improved freestyle, and acts like a shock absorber when traversing unfriendly snow conditions.

Shovel Nose – The tips have been trimmed down in width to reduce the tendency for them to grab when on edge. These tips slice through the snow keeping the board above the snow and tracking directly, resulting in less vibration and a smoother ride, unlike a traditional snowboard that is constantly plowing and crashing thru the snow.

Phat Ass – The Velocity has a 30cm wide Ass preventing toe and heel drag. It is also one of the reasons the Velocity feels so good in powder, due to the increased surface area the board rises to the surface easily to float on top, even at slower speeds.

164 cm Length – With the thinner nose and wider body, the Velocity rides like a smaller snowboard, despite its impressive length. At 164 cm, it offers the perfect size for eating up rough surfaces, cutting cleanly across ice, and staying on top of deep snow.
